Cooling Layout Mistakes in Narrow Seoul Row Houses

Converted row-house basements in Mapo and Yongsan districts often host ten to forty second-generation units. Ceiling height is adequate; aisle width is not. Our thermal audits repeatedly find the same three layout mistakes.

Mistake 1: Back-to-Back Racks Without a Hot Aisle

Operators maximize floor space by placing rack backs against each other. Exhaust from both rows mixes and re-enters the front intakes of neighbouring units. Measured inlet temperatures climb 6–9°C above ambient within two hours.

Fix: Leave at least 80 cm between rack backs or duct exhaust to an external vent. Cost is floor space, not equipment.

Mistake 2: Single Intake From the Parking Ramp

Parking ramp air carries brake dust and winter road salt aerosol. Filters clog in weeks. Clogged filters raise inlet restriction, which drops fan efficiency and hashrate before anyone notices rising power bills.

Fix: Dedicated intake duct with MERV 11 or better, changed monthly in winter.

Mistake 3: Shared Circuit With HVAC Compressors

We covered voltage sag in our S19j Pro basement article. The same issue appears with M30S units on shared residential circuits. Hashrate fluctuates with compressor cycles rather than failing outright — easy to misattribute to pool variance.

Fix: Dedicated 220V circuit for the mining row, sized for continuous load at 80% of breaker rating.

When to Book an Audit

If your fleet average hashrate dropped more than 5% without a clear pool-side explanation, a half-day thermal visit often costs less than replacing hashboards you do not actually need.
